CHAPTER TWELVE

Dane paced across the living room of the suite for the thousandth time. Where was Destiny? He’d been going out of his mind, wondering if she was okay, then worried she’d gotten herself in way over her head. Owen MacKenna was an unknown commodity. The Owen he remembered from when he was a kid might not be the same person. Life and circumstances changed people. If Owen knew what his father had done, killing two innocent people in cold blood, then he couldn’t be trusted. Nothing he’d discovered online indicated Owen was anything more than a devoted son and an astute businessman, overseeing more and more of MacKenna-Duncan’s International concerns.

He spun when he heard the door to the suite open, and stood with his arms crossed over his chest, glaring at Destiny. How could she look so sweet and innocent when she defied him and went out with Owen MacKenna?

“Where have you been?” He broke off abruptly when he noticed her limping slightly. “What happened?”

“A run-in with a lousy driver who doesn’t know what a red light means. Nothing to worry about. A long, hot soak, and I’ll be good to go.”

“Where was MacKenna when you were hurt? I’ll kill him.”

Without waiting for an answer, Dane started for the door, intent on hunting down Owen and tearing him limb from limb. Destiny’s soft moan stopped him, forcing him to turn away from the door and rush back to her side.

“Listen, cowboy, Owen never laid a hand on me. Well, he helped me get back here after the car hit me.”

“Wait a second? You were hit by a car? What were you doing outside the hotel? I thought you were going to dinner here in the hotel.” He scowled, helping her over to the couch and easing her gently onto it. At her wince, he walked to the suite’s bar, grabbed a towel and dumped some ice into it, and brought it back, handing it to her. Shooting him a grateful look, she held it to her hip area.

“I was trying to do my job. After dinner, we walked down to The Mirage and watched the volcano show. I asked a few non-intrusive questions, trying to get him to admit anything about his dad that might be suspicious, but he’s a closed book. On the way back,” she shifted on the couch, wincing and adjusting the ice pack, “we stopped at the corner, waiting for the light to change. When it did, I took a couple of steps, and got clipped by a red-light runner.”

Dane eased carefully onto the sofa beside her, making sure not to jostle her. She was making light of her injuries, but he had the feeling she didn’t want to share how much she hurt. The thought that the hit-and-run might not have been an accident popped into his head, and he said it aloud before he could stop himself.

She shook her head. “I doubt it. Nobody knew we’d leave the hotel, or where we’d go. It would be hard to orchestrate a drive-by, deliberate hit and run.
